Forum rule request/modification

I've been thinking about this for awhile and while I'm sure my suggestion will be greeted with controversy, I want to put it out there.

This is forum about RTA, LMM, and the Anne series. It is not about people's beliefs in Christianity, what type of Christianity they feel is right or wrong [or any religion for that matter]. It is not about politics and what is right or wrong. Whether Obama is freemason or not, etc.

These last few years I've noticed members are joining the forum only to spout their political or religious beliefs [with usually very weak links in their posts being tied to LMM or RTA if they even bother mentioning that in their posts at all]. I'm don't think I'm the only one who feels uncomfortable with the forum being hijacked for the sole of people joining to say sermonize on their beliefs on U.S. politics or Christianity. I joined her to discuss LMM not if President Obama is the anti-Christ or how the Cold War compares to WW 1. There are other forums for that.

We are here to celebrate and discuss LMM and RTA, so we can please add a ban on discussion of religion and politics.

And, yes, I will fully admit that I have participated in those non-LMM discussions before. Yes, I realize I shouldn't have as I was only contributing to the problem. However, I have learned my lesson and have no plans to do for now on.

(I plan on changing my signature as well to reflect something warm and fuzzy about Avonlea or LMM. This is how serious I am about my request. As of right now, my sig will be unattached to posts I make until I come with a quote to replace it.)

I think that's a good idea. (And yes, I'm owning up to exascerbating the issue, too.)

Yet, I would amend the rule a little. Only allow posts regarding religion if there is a direct connection to LMM, her literature, or RTA, given she was married to a Presbyterian minister, and religion did figure in her books and in the series. Proselytizing and sermonizing, on the other hand...no.

One of the members here (can't remember which one now) once said they loved this place precisely because there was no off-topic section, because it was solely about LMM, her literature, and RTA (and the actors connected to it). Let's keep it that way.

I like, I like! I amend my original idea. What you said is far better.

[I bolded the words "direct connection" because I do think there are worthwhile discussions to be had about specifically about LMM and the religion and politics in her literature and life, but I don't feel the forum is currently having them now. We get too off-tangent. Are too off-tangent in several topics currently.]

I agree with this suggestion. I`m new here, and I was really confused when I read some topics and posts regarding religion and politics. I get really annoyed by people who use every opportunity to impose their personal beliefs on others. I don`t care what those beliefs are, I`m here to discuss my favourite tv show.

I totally agree with you Marina. I too get really annoyed when people try to impose their religious or political beliefs on others. I too am here to discuss my favorite tv show and LMM.

Definitely. I would like more discussion about Montgomery and her works here. I think this board would be busier if this was the case.

Hey everyone,
I am terribly sorry if I have offended anyone or if I said anything that was not completely related to RTA or LMM. This is a wonderful forum and I am so happy to have a found a place where people like the same things as me :).

I think you've nothing to worry about, really. :) It's a couple of others who've been spoiling the fun.

I appreciate your comments concerning behavior on the forum. The forum rules have been posted:

Another suggestion--perhaps the topics that are non-LMM related can deleted or the posts within topics that veer into religious/political discussions can be deleted?

While I believe most people will follow the rules now added to the site, most forums had had to deal with flamers who will ignore the rules if they believe they have a loophole.

I'll have to go through the forum once I get the time and determine if the discussion is relevant to Montgomery/RTA.

Thanks!

I would go back and delete my own off-topics posts/topics, but I don't see a way to do it. If I can't outright delete a post, I'll edit down to the wording 'off topic.'

Maybe some of the outright off-topic topics and posts could be purged from the boards?
